The Kewtech SMARTPAT is a Wi-Fi enabled, downloadable PAT tester that can be used either as a stand-alone tester or remotely via the KEWPAT app on a smartphone or tablet. This gives you the convenience of a compact battery-powered instrument, with the record keeping and traceability of a traditional downloadable PAT tester.

It includes automatic test sequences for Class I, Class II, extension leads and portable RCDs, plus a 200mA earth continuity test (safe for IT equipment) and selectable 500V/250V insulation testing for surge-protected equipment. On battery power, Class I and Class II tests include a substitute leakage test. For a full mains leakage test and load measurement, the SMARTPAT can be connected to a 230V or 110V supply (see our guide to 110V equipment).

If you’re new to PAT testing, we recommend attending a PAT testing course before buying a tester. You’ll use the Kewtech SMARTPAT and other models on the course, and learn how to select the correct tests and interpret readings in line with the IET Code of Practice. Our trainers can also help you choose the most suitable tester for your needs.

A Closer Look at the SMARTPAT

smartpat controlled via app
Controlled with Kewpat app

The most significant difference between the SMARTPAT and the Ezypat testers is that it is Wi-Fi enabled, turning it into a fully functional downloadable tester. When paired with the KEWPAT app, the SMARTPAT can be controlled from a phone or tablet and results are stored with appliance details such as asset ID, description, location, site and customer information. Results can be exported as PDF or CSV files.

The Kewpat app is free to use and is available from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

testing an RCD
RCD test

Another key difference is the portable RCD test. The SMARTPAT can test both 10mA and 30mA portable RCDs. The RCD test requires mains supply connection, but unlike some testers it does not require an additional isolation transformer to help prevent tripping an upstream RCD during testing.

6 AA batteries
Powered by 6 X AA batteries

The SMARTPAT can be connected to a mains supply to carry out a leakage test and load measurement at the supply voltage. On battery-only power, a substitute leakage test at 30V is used. A mains supply connection is also required for the portable RCD test.

split section carry case
Soft carry case

The soft carry case has front and rear sections for storing the tester and accessories.

test lead with probe and clip
Test lead

The silicone rubber test lead has an interchangeable crocodile clip and test probe and is a generous 2m in length, making it easy to reach around the back of a computer to attach the clip. Being able to swap out the normal clip for the test probe is useful for testing appliances with less accessible metal parts. The test lead has standard 4mm shrouded connectors, so replacing a lost attachment or cable in the future, shouldn’t be a problem.

nulling the test lead
Nulling the test lead

The resistance of the test lead can be easily nulled by simply pressing and holding the null button for about 2 seconds. A brass earth pin is supplied to attach the test lead to the earth connection on the Smartpat.

Automatic test sequences

The automatic test sequences can be initiated with a single button press on the SMARTPAT, or can be controlled using the app. The app also allows custom test sequences to be used. The earth continuity test is carried out at 200mA, so it can be safely used on all equipment without the risk of causing damage to sensitive electronic components. The insulation test can be set to either 500V or 250V. The 250V test can be used for equipment containing surge protection circuits that would otherwise result in a false fail at 500V.

testing an extesion reel
Extension lead test

A short red IEC lead is included for testing extension leads. The resistance of the IEC lead can also be nulled. For testing longer extension reels, using the customisable tests via the app makes things much easier as an allowance for the higher earth continuity limit can be preprogrammed.

mains supply connection
Mains power connection

The SMARTPAT can be connected to a mains supply to carry out a leakage and load test at the supply voltage. When on battery only power, a substitute leakage test at 30V is used. The mains supply connection is also required for the PRCD test.

110V connection
Dual voltage leakage and load tests

The SMARTPAT can be connected to either a 230V or 110V supply. The leakage and load tests are carried out at the supply voltage, so when connected to a 110V supply the tests run at 110V (see 110V equipment). In this example we are using our 110V power adaptor (not included) to connect the SMARTPAT to a 110V site transformer.
