Job Opportunities in PAT Testing
PAT testing is an important process that ensures electrical equipment is safe to use. Most businesses and organisations carry out regular inspection and testing of portable appliances to comply with health and safety legislation, creating a consistent demand for skilled PAT testers across a wide range of industries.
PAT testing forms part of many roles, including Facilities Managers, IT Support Technicians, Health and Safety Officers and Events Technicians. Developing PAT testing skills can support career progression and increase earning potential.
There are also opportunities to work full-time as a PAT testing engineer. This often involves travelling to customer sites to carry out testing in environments such as healthcare, education, manufacturing and retail. Alternatively, you may choose to become a self-employed PAT tester or set up your own testing business. If you're new to the industry, see our guide on how to become a PAT tester.
Many employers ask for a recognised PAT qualification such as City & Guilds 2377 (or equivalent). If you’re new to PAT testing, our City & Guilds 2377 PAT testing course covers the inspection process, test limits, record keeping and safe working practices. For people carrying out testing in-house (for example schools, facilities teams or landlords), our PAT testing courses are also available at venues across the UK.
Find a PAT Testing Job
Here are some steps to help you find a PAT testing job:
- Look for job openings online: Search for PAT testing jobs on websites such as LinkedIn, Indeed and Totaljobs. Use keywords such as "PAT tester", "electrical safety" and "portable appliance testing" to narrow your search.
- Contact recruitment agencies: Many recruitment agencies specialise in electrical engineering roles and regularly advertise vacancies for PAT testers.
- Contact PAT testing companies directly: Companies that provide PAT testing services may not always advertise vacancies publicly. Contacting them directly can help you understand the skills and experience they look for and may lead to future opportunities.
