The job of a Portable Appliance Test Engineer involves the inspection and testing of portable appliances in and around client premises. The Test Engineer will ensure that a professional service is delivered in a safe and timely manner. In the main this will be achieved in normal working hours but there may be occasions when there is a requirement to work out of hours dependent on the type ofsite and client access. What you will do
Volunteer PAT testers play a critical role in our stores that sell electrical goods. They are responsible for testing the appliances to ensure their safety prior to them being put on sale. They may also test some of the other equipment used for running the shop.

What you will need
The ideal candidate will have experience of this field of work and will need to pass a PAT test course. You will need to be reliable with an enthusiastic approach to working in our store.

You will be required to work with other team engineers on larger jobs which will include Saturdays.

We are looking for a self-motivated person to join our busy Electrical/Electronics workshop team to provide a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) service for the whole Department. With over 20,000 electrical items on the PAT test database, the role holder will work throughout the Department visiting labs, offices and workshops testing all equipment that falls within the PAT guidelines.

The duties of the role holder will include undertaking both a visual check for safety and test the electrical device using the PAT equipment to check the integral safety of the equipment. The role holder will record results on the Department database and when required will remove failed equipment for repair or disposal. The role holder will also provide general assistance to other staff in the electrical/electronic workshop team when required

The successful applicant will have GCSE's or equivalent including English and Mathematics and preferably a Portable Appliance Testing qualification (City & Guilds) although training can be provided, plus electro-mechanical skills and a common sense approach to the potential hazards of mains electrics is essential. They will be able to keep calm under pressure whilst maintaining high standards and quality, meet deadlines, work on their own initiative, multi-task and prioritise. They will have good computing skills and the ability to make decisions, plan and organise work requirements often in unsupervised work situations. Previous experience of working in a higher education environment would be an advantage.

The role is 22.5 hours per week - days and hours to be worked will be negotiable on appointment.

Portable Appliance Tester - Basingstoke

Approximately one third of fires in the workplace are due to electrical faults. The work you carry out testing portable electrical products plays a vital role in keeping people safe.

We don’t require our PAT engineers to be experienced, we will supply all the training you need. We will also provide you with a company vehicle (Which can be used for personal use), all the equipment that you need, and ongoing career development opportunities.

This isn’t a standard 9-5 role. Due to the nature of the work carried out you may be required to work evenings and weekends at times. When we’re especially busy, we may need to put you up in a hotel so testing can be completed for our clients a little further afield. You may be testing electrical devices in difficult to reach areas, which may involve crawling under desks, climbing flights of stairs and spending a lot of the day active.

The role has great earning potential, with average annual earnings being in the region of £26,000 per year. This includes base salary, time paid for travel and bonuses.

A day in the life of a PAT Engineer at phs will involve;

Traveling to customer sites to carry out PAT work.
Completing tests on portable appliances with our customers offices and commercial offices.
Completing documents and required forms to report back on any faults found and work completed.

A full UK manual driving licence
